Channels have stopped buying therights of Malayalam films. This is in protest against the unreasonable and inconsistent increase in rates of satellite fees by film producers and the decision has been taken by the different channels together.
Earlier, when a film became a hit, the rates for their next movie were increased by 5 to 10 lakhs by the producers. But currently, with the success of a movie, the producers are jacking up the rates by up to one crore rupees. In a cascading effect, with the increase in satellite rates, the actors and technicians also demand huge increase in their fees.
Competition among channels for the hit films in one of the reason for the hike in rates, as the makers take advantage of the situation. In fact, things have reached such a stage that a film could be made with the income from the rights alone.
The channels are now demandingthat such unfair practices should be reined in and rates should be fixed for different categories of films. They have decided to reduce the satellites rates by half and any purchase of rights will befinalized only after discussion among the channels.
Channels have not bought the satellite rights of any film after June 1st.
