Mammootty in 'Jawan of Vellimala '

Mammootty has been an actor who always supported the endeavours of fresh directors. You will be astonished to look at the names of directors who kick started a career working in his films, and indeed they are the ones who are reigning the industry now. Laljose, Amal Neerad, Blessy, Anwar Rasheed, Martin Prakkat, M Mohanan, Aashiq Abu, are the few successful names in the list and the actor is still in full spirits working with the new faces, though his recent films with freshers like Sonu Seenulal, and Babu Janardhanan has already created problems in his career. The new movie from Mamootty with a fresh director is ';Jawan of Vellimala' directed by Anoop Kannan, an associate to Laljose. Having inspired from the story lines, Mammooty has even decided to produce the movie under his banner Play house. Telling a feel good story from James Albert in the backdrop of a dam, Mammootty will appear in twin avatars in the movie, which will also feature Sreenivasan, Mamtha Mohandas, and Asif Ali in important roles. The shoot for thisOnam release has already started at Amballoor.

Vinayan : Godfather of horror

Malayalam horror film maker Vinayan is now busy with world famous horror story Dracula. The one month long first schedule of Dracula has completed in Romania. Next schedule will begin at Alapuzha in coming days. 20 member Hollywood team and sixteen Malayali members are in his crew. This upcoming 3D Thriller will release four languages. Sudheer Nair dons lead role of count Dracula. Big stars including Aryan,Vimala Raman, Priya Nambiyar, Ompuri, Nasar, Thilakan will share the screen space. The camera being used for Dracula is canon 3D. Satheesh Kalirolls camera for this horror flick. Vinayan itself produces the movie on the banner of Akash films.

Shaji teams with Lal for 'Kadal'

After the award winning film 'Vaanaprastham', Shaji N Karun, the famous art house director willonce again team up with Mohanlal for the new movie titled as 'Kadal'. Based on the award winning short story with the same title written by T Padmanabhan, the movie will tell the story of a father and his only daughter who realises that they failed to understand someone properly, who was very dearer to them. Shaji N Karun who is currently scripting the movie, is expecting to start the shooting of the movie by the final months of the year . The movie is expected to be a treat for the lovers of good cinema.

Kodeeswaran :: TRP Rating Analysis

Ningakkkum Akam Koodishwaran , the much hyped programme in Asianet started with a bang on April 9th with therough and tough man of Mollwood Suresh Gopi. He essayed his role with much poiseand was dressed in a stunning suit and get up. The show following its fixed format called upon the contestants on stage. Aswathi , a contestant from Trissur came outwith flying colours in the ‘fastest finger round’. Later on the battle began with the questions pouring on. The accent of Suresh Gopi is worth mentioning as it is one of the highlight of show. The programme is aired at 8 pm. Hopingly the programme will reach high TRP ratings as Idea star singer of the same channel. This time, the Surya TV aired, Kayyil Oru Kodi, takes the audience to a height of boredom,by just making a money countinggame, arranging it, and then waiting for the right answer. Channels are not run for charity; we do realize the fact but, is it fair to make a viewer wait for hours, to get an answer. May be the participants are eager to know their luck but, viewer has something called a remote in his hands always, with no restrictionon controlling the same by himself. Comparatively, Kodeeswaran goes a little bit above the Kayyil Oru Kodi stuff, though both are old wines in new bottles.

New Remake ::Chattakkari

The new version of 'Chattakkari', which is under production, has completed its shoot. The movie which was completed in a record 25 days, was shot at Koonnoor and Thiruvananthapuram. Directed by debutante Santhosh Sethumadhavan, the movie feature Shamna Kassim and Hemanth in the lead roles. Innocent, Suvarna and Renuka arealso in the cast lines of the movie which will get to theatres by the months of June. The movie will have four songs set to music by MJayachandran. 'Chattakari' is produced by Sureshkumar in the banner of Revathy Kalamandhir.

'Singam 2' to roll after 'Maatraan'

Suriya and director Hari already delivered a hat trick with 'Aaru', 'Vel' and 'Singam'. The duo is all set to join hands again for 'Singam's sequel, 'Singam 2'. This sequel is touted to be a high voltage action entertainer and willcontinue from where the first part ended. Suriya will start work on this project immediately after he wraps 'Maatraan' with KV Anand. Anushka Shetty and Hansika Motwani are the lead ladies of thisproject. Vivek, Vijayakumar, RadhaRavi and Nassar who were all partof the original will be seen in the sequel as well. Adding to Vivek's presence for providing comic relief will be Santhanam who has become a must in all biggies. Rahman will also be seen in this film. Music is by Devi Sri Prasad again. Tezz :: Movie Review

This would be a rare multi-starrer film that hasn't garnered any buzzaround. Even the one item song starring Mallika Sherawat titled Laila that aired maximum on TV didn't quite receive a thunderous response. However, between the lukewarm reception and the non-promoting, warring actors (yes, there were warring leads Kangna Ranaut and Ajay Devgn in the film too, if that spices up the film for you) Tezz finally makes it to the theaters. What the fate of the film will be is for time to tell. Meanwhile we give you a brief summation whether it's worth the pick for this week or not.The synopsis follows for those ignorant cinegoers whomay not have seen, read reviews of or heard about Hollywood blockbusters like Speed, Taking Pelman 123 among various others, who the diligent cinema buffs can point out much to their annoyance as the film takes its course. An illegal immigrant Aakash Rehna (Ajay Devgn) is deported toIndia for working in UK without permit and also aiding other illegal immigrants. He is separatedfrom his wife Nikita (Kangna Ranaut) right at the time when she is pregnant. Aakash comes back with revenge on his mind and devices a plan to terrorize UK.He plants a bomb in the train that will go off the moment its speed reduces below 60! So while Aakash is on his task along with two aides Adil Khan (Zayed Khan) and Megha (SameeraReddy), Himanshu Verma (Anil Kapoor) counter terrorism chief isback from his retirement to handle his last case and goes all out to save the 500 passengers traveling in the train. Priyadarshan clearly lifts off his plots from various Hollywood films and cares less about people pointing it out. After all, give us some high-octane drama, some fist-fights between two main leads, some romance and gaana-shaana and the so-called aam-junta will take it. Isn't it Priyan? So there's flashbacks of love saga between Ajay Devgn and Kangna Ranaut, flashback of sorry story ofSameera Reddy, a sudden jolting of item song featuring Mallika Sherawat gyrating in a strange African mode and voila! Fillum ready! However, ignoring the flaws, the thrilling elements in the film are attention grabbing in parts and keep you hooked to the storyline, despite you knowing what's to follow. There are also a few in the film who show tremendous faith on Priyadarshan and deliver engaging performances. Anil Kapoor and Boman Irani top the list on that. The two deliver crackling performances and deserve to be appreciated for keeping the audience glued to theseats. Ajay Devgn delivers his best sequences with Anil Kapoor whileKangna Ranaut, Sameera Reddy and Zayed Khan are passable. South star Mohanlal who plays a cop adds only to the humour quotient of the film by his deep south Indian accent and podgy self. There was a lot said about the action sequences in the film and while some actually are executed brilliantly (read - the bike chase sequence shot on Sameera Reddy) there are some shots which have shabby graphic work on display (for example - the sequence of two trains passing simultaneously or even a fairly oldAnil Kapoor jumping off from a building window funnily). Over all, Tezz can be seen for Anil Kapoor and Ajay Devgn and also for the Bollywoodishness of it. Forthe ones disinterested in these elements, Tezz isn't the film for you.

purity in relationship within the family and the sanctity attached toit is highlighted in M.Mohanan’s latest movie aptly titled ‘916’. The name is normally used to describe the purity of gold but here, Mohanan defines the purity of emotions through his movie. Mohanan’s earlier films ‘Katha Parayumbol” and ‘Manikyakallu’ were runaway hits and his latest movie is expected to be similarly successful. Anoop Menon, Asif Ali and Mukeshplay equally important roles in thefilm while Indrans, Salim Kumar and Sudheesh contribute with supporting roles. K.V.Vijayakumar Palakunnu is the producer and the film is made under the banner of Aadith-Aiswarya-Sneha Films. ‘Katha Parayumbol’ with Mammootty had Sreenivasan writing the story and screenplay whereas Mohan himself was the author of the story and screenplay in ‘Manikyakallu. In ‘916’, Mohanan will be continuing the pattern by creating the story and screenplay himself. M.Jayachandran is the music director and the lyrics are contributed by Anil Panachooran and Rafeeq Ahamed. Cinematography is by P.Sukumaran, production controlling by Shafeer Sait and edits by Ranjan Abraham.

Changes in Malayalam Cinema and Superstars !

Malayalam Cinema is preparing to make a wholesome change and the charge is led by Ranjith and a band of a youthful directors. It is encouraging that superstars Mohanlal and Mammootty are holding the reins in this effort to lift Malayalam cinema from the abysmal depths of decay it had fallen into. This is evident from the movies being made with these superstars. SPIRIT directed by Ranjith and with Mohanlal in the principal role takes a dig at the youth for their insatiable urge to gulp down large quantities of booze. Newcomer Anoop Kannan directs JAWAN OF VELLIMALA which stars Mammootty and portrays the anxieties and worries of a man living adjacent to a dam. SPIRIT completed shooting in 31 days setting an example in austerity. Normally, a Mohanlal movie would have taken more than one schedule and would have cost more than 5 crores. Likewise, when Prakash Raj, who was envisaged as the anti-hero, demanded 3 crores as his fees, analternative was found in Shankar Ramakrishnan who incidentally wrote the screenplay for URUMI. Besides cost reduction, Malayalamcinema gained a new star. AntonyPerumbavoor, producer of SPIRIT must have heaved a sigh of relief. Actually, Ranjith started this war against extravagance with a spateof low budget movies like KAYYOPPU, PRANCHIYETTAN, INDIAN RUPEE AND THIRAKATHA daring others to travel along unchartered paths. Emboldened by Ranjith, young directors like Rajesh Pillai, Aashiq Abu and Salim Ahammed came out with offbeat films carrying divergent themes. However, films involving mainstream actors continued in the conventional style. Though Mammooty had expressed his willingness to be a part of the new movement through Ranjith films, most of the offers he received were superstar-centred. Mohanlal has also made his intentions clear now by his role inSPIRIT. In a recent award giving ceremony, Mohanlal offered to give dates to any new young director who approaches him with offbeat themes. SPIRIT with Kaniha as heroine, will be released next month and with thesuccess of the movie, more such roles could be expected from Lal. Among superstars, no one has encouraged new directors as much as Mammootty. He had given dates to Lal Jose, Martin Prakkat, Aashiq Abu, Anwar Rasheed, M.Mohanan, Babu Janardhanan and Seenu Sohanlal without second thoughts and hasnow unearthed a new talent in Anoop Kannan who will be directing the new movie JAWAN OF VELLIMALA being produced by Mammootty’s own Play House. Earlier, Anoop Kannan was working as assistant to Lal Jose. Story and screenplay are by JamesAlbert and Mamtha Mohandas actsin the lead female role. Srinivasan has another important role in the movie. The story is woven arounda dam and the inhabitants aroundit and is another movie treading adifferent path.

'Mallu Singh': A search for a long lost person

The film, produced by Neeta Anto under the banner 'Ann Mega Media' and directed by Vysakh, is nearing to the end of its shooting.It is set to hit the theaters by the beginning of May. The film followsthe search for a missing youngster in the streets of Punjab. 'Mallu Singh' stars Kunchako Boban, Biju Menon, Unni Mukundan, Manoj K Jayan, Suraj Venjaramood, Sidhique, Saikumar,Suresh Krishna, Mamukkoya, Sreejith Ravi, Jojo, Rupa Manjari, Samvrutha Sunil, Meera Nandan, Aparna, Shalu and Geetha. The script is by Sethu. The songs, composed by M.Jayachandran, arewritten by Rajiv Alunkal and Murugan Kattakata. This is apparently Kunchako Boban's 50th movie.

Shamili's return to Mollywood asheroine.

Shamili who had stolen our heartsas a child artist is all set for a comeback to Malayalam cinema asa heroine. She will be marking her return through the film of a debutant director Parthasarathy. The actress is best known for her critically acclaimed performance as the mentally challenged child Anjali in the 1990 film Anjali that fetched her the National Film Award for Best Child Artist, and asa child trapped inside a bore-well in the 1992 film Malootty that fetched her a Kerala State Film Award for Best Child Artist . She was only two years old when she won this national honour. Tamil movie RAJANADAI was her debut film. Her last appearance in Malayalam Cinema was in superhitmovie 'Harikrishnans'(1998).

MLA MANI :: Big Flop

We are told that there was a man by the name of MLA Mani, who was called that way though he wasn't a member of the legislativeassembly. The reason is that when, as a boy, he was asked by a teacher, as to what he wanted to become in life, the boy had replied 'MLA' and the title had stuck ever since! That is the basic premise of Kalabhavan Mani's new film 'MLA Mani 10-aam Classum Gusthiyum' which offers a message that to bea public leader, its not the education that counts, but a golden heart that is willing to go out of its way to serve the commoner's needs. This film is so Mani-yish that you actually wonder if you have gone back a few years again when you saw films like 'Ben Johnson' that had the actor takes up arms against injustice; a time when Mani films used to rule the roost, with their dhamakedaar dialogues, high voltage action sequences and of course the mandatory Mani song. Mani is very much the wronged man in this film as well, and is sent to jail for eight years for a crime that he did not commit. On his return, his only sister (Vidya) commits suicide when raped by a corrupt politician Varkey (Vijayaraghavan). Mani, who was all set to turn over a new leaf, has no other option but to wreak vengeance Varkey. Its not just Mani, but there are others leading a war against Varkey as well. There is a cop named Benjamin (Siddique) who had lost his family and an MLA Lekshmi Priya (Lena) who had seen her lover being butchered todeath before her own eyes! Mani and his team soon get down to the task of bringing Varkey to book, and Mani even gets to becomea real life MLA! Yawn! So is there anything at all in this film that you haven't seen in a Mani film before? The answeris 'No'. And the customary features in every Mani film are here as well. Nothing has changed for this film; neither the times, nor the techniques of film making. It's all the same as it has been a good ten years back. Unfortunately does all this sell in 2012? I have a grave doubt that even hardcore Mani fans would want to see Mani in an avatar thatthey have seen him in, for a million times. He however does a good job, as always, in a role that demands him to be just himself. There is no point in commenting on the script, especially because all these points have already been scored on similar Mani films that had arrived a while back. All I would say is, I wish I could see this actor in a different role. And I feel he does owe to it his fan basethat still arrives at the theatres to watch his films in all earnestness. Verdict: Avoidable

The first in this series titled 'Oru CBI Diary Kurippu' was released in1988 and it turned out to be one of the biggest grossers then. This provided Madhu the impetus to come out with Jagratha (1989), Sethurama Iyer CBI (2004), and Nerariyan CBI (2005). Incidentally, in all these films Mammootty plays the role of a CBI officer Sethurama Iyer, who cracks complicated murder cases in all the four films with ease, but not without leaving the audience on the edge of their seats. The background score of the film became quite popular, and years after the release of the first two sequels, became popular as mobile phone ringtones. All the sequels use the same backgroundscore, composed by music director Shyam. 'The rest of the cast and all other details will be decided at a later stage because at the moment, we are looking into the completion ofthe script,' said Madhu.

UTV Motion Pictures' 'Grandmaster' starring Mohanlal has bagged a clean 'U' certificate from the regional censor board. The film was censored today (April 25) in Trivandrum. It is slated for a worldwide release on May 3. It is said that the censor board called UTV's G Dhananjayan and director Unnikrishnan to the discussions room and highly appreciated the film without giving any cuts. Mumbai, April 26 (IANS) Actor-producer Sanjay Dutt says he wants to be like his late father Sunil Dutt, who was like a pillar of strength for his family. "I want to be like my father. Dutt saheb was like a great support in our lives. I want to be exactly like him. But I would also tell my kids how was I during my childhood days and that don't be like me," Sanjay, who had a turbulent life because of his drug addiction, told reporters here Wednesday. The actor has three children - the eldest is daughter Trishala from his first wife Richa Sharma who died of brain tumour. He has twins - Shahraan and Iqra - from Manyata whom the 52-year-old married in 2008. Trishala grew upin the US and, as a result, Sanjay couldn't spend much time with her. Now he is trying to make up by spending quality time with his twins. He said: "I have never enjoyed my fatherhood with Trishala. I have missed all those golden moments. Like Stanley Kubrick, James Cameron delights both the novice and discerning viewers with the detailin every door knob, every headgear, every marking on everychina-plate and every expression on actors faces. It is thus the mother of all disastermovies not because it is based ona real incident but because of thisattention given to so much detail. It is for the first time in Malayalamfilm history that a song has been shot completely underwater. It has been shot for the movie 'Ettekal Second', produced under the banner 'Fifth Element Film'. The film directed by Kanaka Raghavan has Padmasurya and Jimi playing the main roles. The song, named 'Katharamam Mizhi' has been written by Rafeeq Ahmed. No matter how good a film is, onedoes need star power to drive it to the audience else it's very easy for it to be lost amidst the hoards of films that release week on week. And Bollywood hunk John Abraham surely may have come as a blessing in disguise for filmmaker Shoojit Sircar when he chose to produce a gem such as Vicky Donor. Filmmaker Shoojit Sircar makes his directorial comeback after seven years, his last being Minissha Lamba and Jimmy Shergill starrer Yahan, and it couldn't have been a better return. He takes a topic that still gets shushed in many houses andhas practically mediocre awareness and packs an entertainer around it. For the setting you have Vicky Arora (Ayushman Khurana), a good for nothing Punjabi Munda from Lajpat Nagar refugee colony.His mother, who runs a beauty salon Dolly Beauty Parlour and hasher solo expectation from life, to see her son settled, and an endearingly modern grandmotherwho keeps siding with Vicky for everything. He has a doggy named Whiskey and his neighbour called Pepsi Aunty. The setting in one word is engaging from the very first scene. Now enters Dr Khurana (Anu Kapoor), owner of a listless infertility clinic whose eyes set on Vicky, a potent sperm donor. Aftermuch hesitation from Vicky's end and excessive convincing from Dr.Khurana, he finally agrees to turn into a donor and with the money that follows from his 'job' completely revamps his life. Cupid finally strikes Vicky as he comes across Ashima (Yami Gautam) - a divorcee banker. The two marry with Vicky keeping his professionunwraps. How his secret unravels and affects his life follows through the rest of the plot. A film revolving around a social subject has many chances of turning preachy, verbose or even melodramatic but Shoojit Sircar doesn't let any of the three affect his entertainer and very smartly passes all his messages. The first half is a cracker with dialogues that have trillion ROFL (Rolling on the floor laughing) moments. While the second half does get tad predictable and dull. But even at that, Shoojit keeps away from the melodramatic moroseness a lot of films slump into. What aids the film strongly is the performance of each and every actor. Right from the grandmother (Kamlesh Gill) to mother (Dolly Ahluwalia) and evenAshima;s father in the film, every character showcases perfection. Yami Gautam, who starred in TV Shows and Commercial Ads makes a very confident film debut. Vicky Donor however belongs completely to Ayushman Khurana and Anu Kapoor. The two put together a highly engaging, endearing and entertaining show.Ayushman surely can say good bye to his TV anchoring days as the hero is definitely here to stay. Not only does he have a brilliant screen presence but is multi-talented too. He also writes, composes and sings a song PaaniDa for the film which is lilting and soothing to the senses. Review ::Orukal oru kannadi

It's predictable. It's empty headed.It's nonsensical. For a film with all of these qualities, Oru Kal Oru Kannadi is surprisingly bearable and easy to sit through in spite ofits exaggerated runtime. We have an old story. Hero decides to gatecrash the marriage of his lover and put an end to it. Add a comic sidekick and there's little reason for you to believe that you haven't seen this before. Except, you haven't. Director Rajesh doesn't care about the story; he knows that the Tamil audience will chew on anything chewable. The strength of the filmis in the dialogue- the comic comparisons Rajesh makes while drawing parallels to real life situations; and its delivery- the accents he's amused by. He directs his actors into communicating both of them, relying mostly on Santhanam and his nasal twang. OKOK does get retarded and crass. I didn't think I'd survive. But the humour got me by. It is silly and of low intellect but, nevertheless, funny. However, I doobject to OKOK taking itself seriously. To even ask a character with no human depth to utter a word like ego in a film as silly and ridiculous as this? To even dare tomilk sentiment from viewers with such nonsense? I didn't care about the lead character's parentsat all. Their marital problem exist merely as an issue that Rajesh wishes to address and that is just one among the few pointless storylines that OKOK gets sidetracked into. Not a good idea for a movie that's over three hours long.

Malayalam Cinema is preparing to make a wholesome change and the charge is led by Ranjith and a band of a youthful directors. It is encouraging that superstars Mohanlal and Mammootty are holding the reins in this effort to lift Malayalam cinema from the abysmal depths of decay it had fallen into. This is evident from the movies being made with these superstars. SPIRIT directed by Ranjith and with Mohanlal in the principal role takes a dig at the youth for their insatiable urge to gulp down large quantities of booze. Newcomer Anoop Kannan directs JAWAN OF VELLIMALA which stars Mammootty and portrays the anxieties and worries of a man living adjacent to a dam. SPIRIT completed shooting in 31 days setting an example in austerity. Normally, a Mohanlal movie would have taken more than one schedule and would have cost more than 5 crores. Likewise, when Prakash Raj, who was envisaged as the anti-hero, demanded 3 crores as his fees, analternative was found in Shankar Ramakrishnan who incidentally wrote the screenplay for URUMI. Besides cost reduction, Malayalamcinema gained a new star. AntonyPerumbavoor, producer of SPIRIT must have heaved a sigh of relief. Kerala Cyber Cell Killing Piracy ..!

There is some cheer for Malayalam film industry. The anti-piracy cell (APC) of the state police has discovered the major source of movie piracy with the capture of Sreenivasan from Bangalore who has led them to the prime links in the industry. According to the APC DySP S.Rafeeq, almost 80% of the piracy business is handled by this group identified by Sreenivasan and is a major breakthrough in anti-piracy investigations. During their search, they had arrested the manager and operator from Bangalore after discovering that they were shooting films from their theater secretly. More than 40 films were shot in this manner in the last six monthsand distributed. Most of them were Malayalam films. This was the first lead and the information obtained from the arrested persons led to Sreenivasan and the subsequent developments. The modus operandi was to maketwo copies of each movie, one of which was sent to Chennai and the other to a UK based Malayalee who uploaded these films. The UKbased youth is identified as Prem from Varkala. The Chennai copy was converted to several CDs by a group of Tamil youths staying in Burma Bazar and these pirated editions were sent to Bheemapally in Trivandrum for further distribution. The copying of films was done using sophisticated equipments. The clues have led to breaking the back of piracy industry and there are signs that there is a major slow down after the discovery. The uploading fromUK which had slowed down when the search was extended toUK, has stopped completely after the chase got closer.

Review:: Josettante Hero

Vijayaraghavan as Josettan in 'JOSETTANTE HERO' tries desperately to live up to the role of a washed out film maker throwing his dice for one last time. His one-time protégé Haritha(Krita Kapoor), who has become abusy star, comes to help him with dates conjured out of nowhere. Superstar Ravi Praksh (Ashokan) also agrees to act in Josettan’s film though his intentions were not so noble. Josettan has to endure several mishaps during the shooting but Haritha comes tohis aid every time. And then there is Saajan (Anoop Menon), who was just a photographer forced to take up acting. He gets some coaching from the director (Nandu) and miraculously manifests into a verygood actor. Through all his travails, Haritha stands by Josettan’s side helping with dates by avoiding other directors, by giving money when Josettan is left penniless and supporting him emotionally. In the last part, it was Saajan whohelps him with a daring rescue act to save the film reels and somehow reach the theaters just in time for the release. After coming out of the theater, was a bit perplexed and unable toidentify the real hero in the movie.Was it Haritha with all her compassion and empathy trying desperately to save Josettan or Saajan who acrobatically saves the reels from perishing? May be the director has left it to the viewer to decide! However, the acting is nothing to write home about and most of it comes out as one dimensional. Even the attempts to highlight theidiosyncrasies of superstars have not hit the target. Story is hardly plausible and somescenes are positively outrageous. Dialogues are lacking in content and spirit. All in all, you wont miss anything by giving the film a miss. Verdict: Avoid.

Kerala State Film Development Corporation held its first meeting at Trivandrum . The main agenda for the meeting was aimed at further improving the Malayalam film industry. The film city will be bulid near the chitranjali film studio, 70 acres of land will be utilised for the same. The project is a joint venture from the part of the government as well as from the KSFDC. “This project will be a futuristic model and will strengthen our industry”,Sabu Cherian[chairman KSFDC] told the press. The other important aspect is to build a theatre complex in Alapuzha,which will be modelled on Saritha, Savitha, Sangeetha theatres. The third project on the list is to give a face-lift to Kalbhavan theatre in Trivandrum and make it available for future releases. The meeting was attended by KFDC M D Sajeev Kumar Padjoshy,vice chairman Idavela Babu and other prominent members of the film fraternity K Madhu, Devaraj, Baiju, Captain Raju and Maniyan Pillai Raju

Navodhayam of malayalam is passed away

Veteran film producer, director, and entrepreneur Navodaya Appachan passed away today at 6.43 pm at Cochin. He was 88. He had been honoured with JC Daniel award for his contribution to Malayalam cinema industry. He is the founder of Navodaya Studio. He had several ‘firsts’ to his credits. Appachan had pioneered several novel ventures in the film industrylike first 3D movie MY DEAR KUTTICHATHAN, first cinemascope film THACHOLI AMBU and the first70mm movie PADAYOTTAM. Appachan was also the producer of the mega-serial `Bible Ki Kahaniyaan' on Doordarshan. He had produced several hit malayalam movies under the banner of Navodaya productions. Cinematographer turned filmmaker Santhosh Sivan has become the first Indian and more over the first one from Asia Pacificto get inducted to the prestigious American Society Of Cinematographers [ASC]. The greatness of the honour is such that the organization has only 340 members. It is learned that Santhosh was nominated to ASC by the famous American cinematographer Michael Chapman. Santhosh Sivan graduated from the Film and Television Institute ofIndia (FTII) and went on to complete 45 features and 41 documentaries. He was a founding member of theIndian Society of Cinematographers (ISC) and is the most awarded director of photography (DP) in India. He wasawarded the National Films Award for Best Cinematography four times, for the films Perumthachan (1991), Kaalapani (1996), Iruvar(1997), and Dil Se.. (1998).

Aashiq Abu is back with another of his experimental movie 22 FEMALE KOTTAYAM starring Rima Kallingal and Fahad Fazil. After the path breaking SALT N PEPPER, which had an unusual theme for a not so unusual story, Aashiq haspicked up another contemporary subject and made it in to a refreshingly different story. Violence on women is in the news as much for the humane aspect as for the sensationalism itcauses. Aashiq Abu looks at it from a different angle and brings out the stark facts in a subtle yet humorous manner making for compelling viewing. The story, written by Abhilash Kumar and Shyam Pushkaran is all about Tesse Abraham and Cyril Mathew, (Rima Kallingal and Fahad Fazil), their love, their travails and their relationship. The story also deals with eve teasing, photographing of unsuspecting females followed byblackmail and other kinds of silentviolence on women. The boldnessshown by the director in speaking out against such outrageous acts and the reactionsof the women concerned will hopefully bring about a change among the youth in Kerala. The very good technical support and some extremely good and matured acting along with the effort of the director makes the movie stand out from the run-of-the-mill stuff served on the unsuspecting public. This is a movie which takes a socially significant theme, dissects it threadbare and comes out with solutions. The movie makes you ponder at the unfairness of it all. If you are expecting the usual slap-stick comedy and ferocious fist fights combined with hip shaking dance scenes, this is definitely not the movie for you. Tessa K Abraham(Rima Kallingal) is a qualified nurse from Kottayamworking in C M S Hospital, Bangalore. As is the wont of present day nurses, Tessa too hasdreams of going to Canada and for this purpose, she approaches a Visa agency. There she meets Cyril Mathew (Fahad Fazil)and verysoon their acquaintance blossomsinto love. But things don’t turn out the way she wanted and she has to face some stark and brutal realities which are prevalent in today’s society. She turns into an avenging angel and the way she sets about to achieve her ends is what the movie is all about. Rima Kallingal is scintillating in thetitle role and packs enough punchto make her role very convincing. This must surely be her best performance so far. Fahad Fazal, as Rima’s pair, gives a subdued yet effective performance. Resmi Sathish (Subaida) be noticed for her acting. And the veterans Prathap Pothan, TG Ravi and Sathar do their roles effortlessly. Cinematography by Shyju Khalid isblemishless. Rex Vijayan’s music ispleasing and the sound effects are very impressive, merging withthe sordid theme of the story. Vivek Harshan has done a decent editing job further enhancing the quality. Verdict: Excellent.

Add the glamour of Mammootty and the talents of Lal and you have a story which will entertain both the young and the old alike. It has comedy, spectacular action, family drama and romance sprinkled liberally throughout the movie which will keep you entertained till the end. Raja(Mammootty) and Kari(Lal) areprofessional freestyle boxers doing their trade in Delhi. Hailing from Kottayam, they are not just co-brothers but are a symbol of genuine friendship. They are nicknamed Cobras, the names being indicative of the King of snakes King Cobra and the extremely poisonous Black Cobra and they love to be called like that.So they came to be known as the King Cobra and Black Cobra. Very strong and competing among themselves in loving each other, they also like anything beginning with sound 'Co. ' They have also taken a vow to marry sisters(Padmapriya & Kanika), andin order to fulfill their wish, they gather all their belongings and savings and return to Kottayam tosettle down. They look for a place beginning with Co. Their first choice was Kottayam but they could not stay there the way they wanted to. In their wanderings insearch of a place, they finally land up in Coimbatore and decide to settle down there. Their life in Coimbatore and the amusing and engrossing incidents they come across are portrayed in the movie “Cobra”. Mammootty gives another brilliantand realistic performance timing his comedy acts to perfection andhis good looks and physique are apt for the role. Lal is again on theprowl with his forceful acting funny lines. The partnership has clicked again as they did in ‘Thommanum Makkalum’, and ‘Best Actor’. Lalu Alex has used all his experience to give another fine performance. The sisters’ roles have been handled nicely by Padmapriya and Kanika. Babu Antony with his impressive looks was underworked with a small role. Comedy is provided by Manian Pilla Raju and Salim Kumarwhich is bearable up to a certain point. Rest of the cast including Jagathy Sreekumar, Kunjan, Radhika, Kalabhavan Navas, Sreejith Ravi have played their roles well. Another catching point of ‘Cobra’ is the perfection attained in most of the technical aspects including direction, camera, editing and music. Camera is by Venu, editing by V.Sajan and music by Alex Paul. 'Cobra' is certainly not a film that you should expect to transform the world. Just sit back, relax and hang around for the laughs. At just more than two hours ,'Cobra' may turn out to be a OK entertainer. It could have been better for sure, but still it providessome really funny moments. Not meant for prudes, but if you have a sense of humour and loves being taken for a harmless ride, go on and watch ‘Cobra’. It’s worth the cost of the ticket.

Maya mohini- theatrical review Dileep has already proved that he could portray female roles effortlessly. In the new movie MAYAMOHINI he goes one step further and lives the life of a female, the enchanting Mayamohini. Dileep’s role in MAYAMOHINI directed by Jose Thomas will amaze anyone watching the movie. Dileep has been known to don different roles and this one in particular will enhance his reputation. This has to be one of the outstanding roles in his acting career. He changed the assumptions regarding a hero as the effeminate Radhakrishnan in CHANTHUPOTTU and now he has gone even further in the art bringing out feminine traits in hisacting. Balakrishnan(BijuMenon), belonging to the aristocratic Vadkkedath family of Ottapalam, got into business in spite of beingadvised by his best friend Adv.Lekshmi(Baburaj) to desist from doing so, and promptly lost everything. The family astrologer is consulted again who urges Balakrishnan to wed a girl with ‘Chothi Nakshathram’ to change his fortune. Then enters Mayamohini(Dileep) as Balakrishnan’s wife and then the fun starts. Is their family life happy? From where did this 'Mayamohini' come?? More and more of it make the crux of the movie. The movie is meant to be an out and out comedy and it turns out just like that! Dileep has shown his versatility and ability to fit into any role by the ease with which he lives the role of Mayamohini. His body language, demeanour, mannerism, dialogue and his walkare absolutely astonishing. He plays the ‘Janapriya Nayakan’ cardto the core in his trademark style. Biju Menon has done a good job without being exceptional. But exceptional should be the description for Baburaj’s peppy acting which comes as a great relief. The combination of the three does bring a few laughs from time to time. Another suspense element of the flick is the comedy attempt by Spadikam George. The female leads Lakshmi Rai and Mythili have limited roles while the supporting cast of Madhu Warrier, Kalabhavan Shajon, Vijayaraghavan , Nedumudi Venu, Mohan, Abu Salim and Aju Varghese play their roles well. Direction by Jose Thomas is ok and editing by Johnkutty is just average. Well, the story looks nothing new and the situations have been seen before several times, in some of those old comedy flicks. Still writer duo Sibi K Thomas and Udayakrishna have managed in developing this weakplot into a perky script . Camera by Anil Nair and music Berny Ignatius are good without being spectacular. The director is a bit confused whether to make the film a comedy or a family drama and ends up making two different parts. It gives the feel as though you have watched two films, pre as well as post interval, the characters and places change which does not have anything to do with the main narration and then the director struggles to somehow complete the story by acontrived climax. In short, 'Mayamohini' certainly follows the same old formula, but even then it is a fairly enjoyable ride. It could have been more attractive, if the second half had more laughs. If you don’t think too much and just want to have some funny time at the theatres, this one could be a possible option.
