Usthadh Hotel :: Malayalam Movie Review

As thename suggests, this is the story ofa hotel but it is also the story of a deep relationship between a young man and an old man set apart by a generation.

Kareem (Thilakan) has been managing Ustad Hotel for the last thirty five years and his grandson Faisi(Dulquer Salmaan) is always there along with Karim, knowing him, understanding him and loving him. The meaning of Ustad is friend and friendship is highlighted in every aspect of Ustad, both in letter and spirit. Situated near the Calicut Beach, people flock to the hotel for the wonderful cuisine prepared and served by the twosome. The food is wholesomeand satisfying and the customers include locals and outsiders. And Faisi vibes perfectly with his grandfather’s ideas and attitude. This deep bond between grandfather and his grandson forms the crux from which the story is woven.

Anwar Rasheed, who has already directed super hits like ‘Rajamanikyam’, ‘Chotta Mumbai’ and ‘Annan Thambi’, directs ‘Ustad Hotel’. Listin Stephen, maker of another hit film ‘Traffic’, produces ‘Ustad Hotel’ under the banner of Magic Frames. Dulquar Salman is Faisi and Thilakan is Karim, the two building a bridge between two generationa just as in the movie. And to complete the dazzling list, ‘Manjadikuru’ fame Anjali Menon writes the screenplay.
To add lustre and romance, NithyaMenon appears as Shahna who is in love with Faisi. Others in the cast are Siddique, Lena, Kunjan, Mamukoya, Bhagath and Prem Prakash. The film tells the story of ordinary people in ordinary surroundings living ordinary lives. It contains humour, love, pain and above all human values. It is a film one could relate to, where you find simple people doing heroic things, not with their fists but with their minds and emotions.

All the actors have performed out of this world with the youthful and glamorous Dulquer proving once again that he is coming out of his father’s shadow in the role of Faisi. Thilakan proves that thereis no substitute for experience with a subtle yet poignant performance. Nithya Menon is a revelation and will be a hot contender. Bhagath creates a niche for himself and the same could be said of Siddique, Mamukoya, Manian Pilla Raju, Kalabhavan Haneef and Lena, all ofthem at ease in their roles. Anjali Menon has run riot with thecharacters giving them a free reinto grow and in the process she could be forgiven if occasionally the plot suffers. The rest of the film crew like cinematographer(S.Lokanathan), editor(Praveen Prabhakar), art director(Biju Chandran), costume designer(Sameera Saneesh) and the choreographer (Shanker) have managed to keep abreast with the tempo and spirit of the movie. Gopi Sunder’s music injectsmore life to the already colourful movie.

‘Ustad Hotel’ is a moving film, the story well written by an extremelygifted artist, the film directed by a young and genuine talent and Anwar has definitely won the firstround effortlessly. Hats off the whole team for a splendid show!

‘Ustad Hotel’ is refreshing, captivating and engrossing.

Verdict: Good.

SPIRIT Takes A Massive 87 Lacs Opening Day Gross (BOXoffice analysis)

SPIRIT sets the boxoffice on fire with an earth shattering opening of 87 lacs in the opening day. The Mohanlal starrer has collected 3.12 Crores in it's extended opening weekend of 4 days. The film has got excellent word of mouth, and going by the trend, SPIRIT is set to be the 4th best opening film in 2012 behind CASANOVVA, THE KING AND THE COMMISIONER and MAYAMOHINI It is widely believed that, this is byfar the best opening ever secured for a film which does not belong to a mass / festival category.
SPIRIT seems to have comfortably withstood the stern challenge posed by BACHELOR PARTY which too has taken a big initial as expected. The film directed by Renjith, released under the banner of Aashirvad Films in 79 theatres across Kerala. The film is expectedto break even, early in its second first week itself, from its theatricalshare alone, as the production was completed in just 39 days, in a shoe string budget, widely believed to be less than 3 Crores, excluding printing and publicity costs.
SPIRIT gives a hatrick of hits to Renjith after PRANCHIYETTAN and INDIAN RUPEE. It is also a welcomechange as far as the boxoffice is concerned, as quality products with an optimum budget are raking in big money. SPIRIT is expected to rule the roost for the next couple of weeks, and at the moment looks at a lifetime gross of 9.50 - 10 Crores minimum, unless the collections go haywire in the coming weeks.
The movie has earned housefull shows all over Kerala on its first Monday, which leads us to a first week gross in the range of 4.25 - 4.50 Crores.

VERDICT : EXCELLENT OPENING

Boxoffice review ::week 24 2012 june

RANK 1
SPIRIT
Spirit takes the Kerala boxoffice bystorm, securing the best ever opening for a Ranjith directed film. The word of mouth is highly encouraging, and it seems like themovie is set for long run at theatres.
Gross : 3.12 Crores (4 Days)
Verdict : EXCELLENT OPENING

RANK 2

BACHELOR PARTY
The initial which Bachelor Party has managed, does indeed match with the hype and buzz surrounding the film. Though a poorly executed climax may possibly hamper its collections once the negative public opinion spreads.
Gross : 2.08 Crores (3 Days)
Verdict : VERY GOOD OPENING

RANK 3

MALLU SINGH
The collections have shown a growth of about 10% from the 6th weekend to the 7th weekend, which has not come as a surprise.Mallu Singh made full use of its last open week, with Hero and Thiruvambadi Thamban failing to impress.
Gross : 8.42 Crores
Verdict : HIT

RANK 4
 DIAMOND NECKLACE
Diamond Necklace is the undoubtedly the film that held up the best in 2012. The movie which released in 24 theaters, in its 7th week runs in 29 theaters. The film has thrived on metro centers, where it has been lapped up with both hands.
Gross : 4.81 Crores
Verdict : HIT

RANK 5

 - HERO
Hero just about manages to cling on to the 5th spot in our rankingscollecting about 15 lacs in its 3rd week. The film buffs have moved on to Simhasanam which is around the corner
Gross : 1.87 Crores
Verdict : FLOP

RANKINGS BASED ON COLLECTIONS FROM 11 JUNE 2012 - 17 JUNE 2012

BACHELOR PARTY grosses 2.07 Crores in 3 days (Boxoffice analysis)

Amal Neerad directed BACHELOR PARTY has taken a tremendous opening in Kerala, grossing 76 Lacs on the opening day, and 2.07Crores in 3 days of theatrical run. While the film is being appreciated for its stylish visuals and slick presentation, it is widely believed that the climax is a big letdown.

The word of mouth is negative, which caused a slight dip in collections on Sunday. As per the early reports, the film has held up reasonably well on Monday, and looks at an opening week gross in the range of 3.50 - 3.75 Crores.
While Saturday collections showeda drop of about 15% from Friday, Sunday showed minimal growth, which is a concern. It remains to be seen how the collections hold up over the weekdays, which shallgive a clear picture of the lifetime gross BACHELOR PARTY may achieve.

BOV BUZZ
Amal Neerad once again proves that he is a Director who commands a big opening. Thougha couple of his films have fallen apart after the initial buzz, it can be safely regarded that, with a decent word of mouth, an Amal Neerad flick shall become safe, largely due to its potential to attract a big initial. But the fact that his films fail to generate even a mixed opinion amongst the viewers is a matter of concern.

The film shall prove to be extremely crucial for Asif Ali, whose recent ventures, apart from Ordinary, have gone largely unnoticed. A good performance by BACHELOR PARTY at the boxoffice shall play an important role in bringing his career back on track. There is no official information available on the cost or the satellite rights for BACHELOR PARTY. It may require a gross in the region of 7 - 8 Crores to render it safe. There is a buzz in the trade that Amal Neerad has made an attempt to alter the climax of the movie, which as of now is not popular with the viewers, however we are yet to hear any official announcement on this.

VERDICT : GOOD OPENING

"Ustad Hotel" release fixed on June29th.

The rumours regarding the release of ‘Ustad Hotel” are baseless and thework of a few mischievous people, according to the director Anwar Rasheed. SAKUNI ::: Tamil movie Review

Karthi has become a familiar name among the Telugu audiences with the success of some of his dubbed movies in Telugu. In order to cash in on his popularity and fan following, the producers started making films in bilinguals. His latest movie Sakuni is one such attempt. The film has many Telugu artistes like Prakash Raj, Kota Srinivasa Rao, Radhika, Roja, Pranitha and others. When it comes to the story....
Kamal Krishna (Karthi) is a normal middle class guy and he wants to save his house inSamalkot as the government is planning to construct a railway sub-way. In a bid to save it, he meets Chief Minister Bhupati (Prakash Raj), but he is insulted by him. To teach him a lesson, Kamal supports opposition leader Perumal (Kota Srinivasa Rao). What kind of steps Kamal takes to teach a lesson to Bhupati? Will he be able to save his ancestral house? Answers to these questions are to be seen on the screen.

Performance: In Sakuni , Karthi steals the show with his wonderful performance. He has taken whole responsibility of running the show on his shoulder. Pranitha has no much scope except to shake legs with thehero.
Santhanam tickles the funny bones of audiences. Prakash Raj, Kota Srinivasa Rao, Roja, Radhika, Anushka, Andrea, Kiran Rathod have also done justice to their respective roles.

Technical: PH Muttaiah's cinematography is bright andaverage, while Srikar Prasad'sediting is very dull.
GV Prakash Kumar's music is below the par and none of the songs are impressive andfoot-tapping. Even the background score is very dulland the poor re-recording fails to elevate the scenes.

The director has chosen an excellent storyline with political backdrop, but has failed to narrate it properly. All the scenes are bits and pieces as he has chosen a novel way to narrate in the form of flashbacks. The entirefilm looks very dull due to unimpressive screenplay. He has also failed to tap the energies of Prakash Raj, Kota Srinivasa Rao, Nazar, Radhika and Karthi. Roja's character iswasted. All the dialogues in the film had the Tamil scent and lacked local touch.

The production values of Bellamkonda are good. The entire first half of the film is devoted to narration of silly points in the form of flashbacks. Second half takes fast pace for some time, but the director lose grip on the subject again.

Remarks: Watch the film if you are a hardcore fan of Karthi. Otherwise, you can wait for the DVD as the film isnot that exciting and interesting to watch by goingto the theatre. The commercial success of the film depends on how could Karthi pulls audiences to the theatre.

Cast: Karthi, Pranitha, Prakash Raj, Chandramohan, Kota Srinivasa Rao, Santhanam, Nazar, Radhika, Roja, Kiran Rathod and others.

Credits: Cinematography - PH Muttaiah; Editing - Srikar Prasad; Music - GV Prakash Kumar; Presenter - Bellamkonda Suresh; Producer - Gnanavel Raja; Story, screenplay and direction - Shankar Dayal.

VERDICT HIT
Cobra marked the return of Mega Star Mammootty to the genre which had produced most of his recent hits - Comedy. Mammootty was in desperate need of a genuine hit at the boxoffice after suffering successive failures on a trot for 18 about 15 months. Though it cannot be claimed that Cobra was an outright winner, it needs to be acknolwedged that the film managed to pull a brilliant initial, which made it possible for the film, which had a mixed opinion to gross about 6 crores from Kerala alone. The distribtors suffered marginal losses at the overseas market.
The satellite rights fetched a goodamount, and made Cobra profitable for Anto. It is now becoming increasingly alarming that the superstar movies largely depend on the initial and the rights to become profitable.

GRANDMASTER :: Box office collection update

GRANDMASTER may have lost the buzz around it during past coupleof weeks, but shall prove to be a profitable venture for its distributors, with a bit of help from the whopping satellite rightsamount which it managed to fetch. As per reports, it can now be confirmed that Surya TV has bagged the rights for as much as 4 Crores, however, in the initial stages it was widely believed that the price was much lesser.
The 5 week gross figure is about 6.98 Crores from Kerala, with the distributor share crossing 3 Crores comfortably.
GRANDMASTER took an initial which was pretty decent considering the genre to which it belongs to. But it evidently lost theboxoffice battle to MALLU SINGH and to DIAMOND NECKLACE during the later weeks, The unusually huge number of removals, coupled with a flush of new releases severely affected the collections after week 3.
The movie continues to run in just 17 screens in Week 6, and is expected to be removed from most of these when SPIRIT releases.
It is definitely a topic deserving anhealthy argument whether the rights amount fetched by the movie should be considered whilejudging their boxoffice status. While taking heed of the same, it needs to be understood that a product in the film industry does have multiple sources of inflow, and the film is being produced keeping an eye on all of these revenue streams.
It is a fact that, GRANDMASTER could have made it much bigger than it actually did. However, thereis no denying that fact that it earned more than industry average profits.

Channels stopped buying the rights of Malayalam films !

Channels have stopped buying therights of Malayalam films. This is in protest against the unreasonable and inconsistent increase in rates of satellite fees by film producers and the decision has been taken by the different channels together.
Earlier, when a film became a hit, the rates for their next movie were increased by 5 to 10 lakhs by the producers. But currently, with the success of a movie, the producers are jacking up the rates by up to one crore rupees. In a cascading effect, with the increase in satellite rates, the actors and technicians also demand huge increase in their fees.
Competition among channels for the hit films in one of the reason for the hike in rates, as the makers take advantage of the situation. In fact, things have reached such a stage that a film could be made with the income from the rights alone.
The channels are now demandingthat such unfair practices should be reined in and rates should be fixed for different categories of films. They have decided to reduce the satellites rates by half and any purchase of rights will befinalized only after discussion among the channels.
Channels have not bought the satellite rights of any film after June 1st.

BACHELOR PARTY :: Malayalam Movie Review.

Director Amal Neerad is known for his technically superior films and ‘Bachelor Party' is no exception. It has pace, action, music and some fine performanceto keep you riveted to your seat. Though the script is nothing spectacular, the film is engrossingas long as you are watching it.
A group of close friende decide on a journey together and during their travels, unexpected developments take place. The movie covers the events of three days and what takes place within this time frame. .
Geevarghese (Indrajith), Tony (Asif Ali), Neethu (Nithya Menen), Benny (Rahman), Ayyappan (Kalabhavan Mani) and Fakeer (Vinayakan) are the main characters. Prithviraj and Remya Nambeesan appear in brief but important roles which have a bearing on the story. Rahman towers with his physical presence and contributes greatly to the story thread. As always, Kalabhavan Mani is simply marvelous. Indrajith proves his credentials amply with a superb performance. Asif Ali has done a fine job and makes the proceedings believable. Vinayakanhas done a decent job while Lena,Jinu Joseph, Aashish Vidyarthi andSunil Sukhada lend able support.
Prithviraj excels in his brief appearance with a flamboyant display and John Vijay suits his role like a dovetail. Nithya Menon is grace personified and looks elegant. Ramya Nambeeshan is nubile and titillating while Padmapriya sparkles with an itemnumber. The film has all the ingredients required to make it exciting such as its brilliant technical skills, wonderfully choreographed sequences, fantastic costume designs, electrifying music and hair splitting chases.
Cinematography by Amal is at its best and editing by Vivek Harshanis flawless. Screenplay by R.Unni and Santhosh Aachikkanam is reasonably well done. Art direction by Joseph Nellickal and Prathap is fine. While the film does keep you spellbound for long periods, for a major part, it isdragging and the climax is all too easily predictable and fell down.
‘Bachelor Party’ has style, technique and incomparable panache in delivery but with all that, the film lacks in subject with a very thin story-line. Expectationswere sky-high after the publicity blitz and viewers could not be blamed if they anticipated something better. Amal Neerad has quality and knows a thing or two about film making; so surely he will come out with a better product having a strong substance along with all the technical strength. Malayalam cinema needs people like him.

Verdict: Average and Poor script.

Spirit ::Malayalam movie Review

Once in a while comes a movie that makes your spirits soar and helps you forget the mediocrity that thismedium often serves. That it doeswithout seeking recourse to any manipulative tools we are all too familiar with, makes it even more remarkable. This movie solely depends on unalloyed storytelling skills.
SPIRIT is devoid of the prodigiousfeats and duels carried out by superhuman characters which are normally associated with Ranjith-Mohanlal team. Instead the movie presents real life situations with more scope for acting rather than for stunts. In fact Ranjith has been coming out with such films for some time now and he has been faithful to the pattern once more.
Reghunandan (Mohanlal) is an ex-Bank of England employee who resigned his lucrative job because he was bored with the rather sedentary nature of his work. Having lived in different parts of the world as a bank employee, he chose journalism as his next career and worked in different metropolises in India. Not satisfied, he quit the job yet again and is now writing an English novel. He is essentially a loner but loves his pegs and has an expensive collection of vintage drinks at home. Captain Nambiar(Madhu) is his next door friend. So also is Meera(Kanika) and her husband Alexy(Shanker Ramakrishnan). Strange as it might seem, Meera was once married to Reghunandan. And then Mani, the plumber enters Reghunandan's relaxed and comfortable life and changes everything, bringing some meaning to his life.
The film depends heavily on Mohanlal's histrionic skills to be convincing and it works. It is this effortless and natural performance that gives Spirit the lifeblood. Among the supporting cast, Madhu as Captain Nambair gives ample support.
Thilakan is incredible and comes up with a controlled and riveting performance. Kanika may not have much screen time for a leading lady but her performance will remain etched in viewers' memory. Shanker Ramakrishnan looks convincing with his style, mannerisms and dialogue delivery. Suraj Venjarumoodu, Nandu, Kalpana, Sidharth Bharathan, Lena, TP.Madhavan come up with fine performances.
Ranjith's movies, generally, are embellished with competent actors who deliver super performances. And here too, every member of the cast shines in his/her role, the length of the role notwithstanding. Shahabaz Aman’s music , Santhosh Raman's art work and Venu in camera alsogive apt support to Ranjith in bringing out a memorable movie, which may equal his bests.
''There isn't really a need to find reasons for each and everything. Or else, reasoning may soon become your way of life'' - Renjithreminds us through another best creation. All in All, 'Spirit' is a refreshingly different movie .Recommended for all those who like to have something novel and distinct from the regular run of the mill stuffs. It is a slice of life which the populace and the regular personswould relate to.. A definite prescription for all, on theatres.

"Kamasutra 3D is notgraphic porn, but a classic one": Rupesh Paul

'Kamasutra' is a valued text, as significant as the Gita or Ramayana, among the sacred texts of India. It is very pathetic toassociate the name with porn every now and then', says a furious Rupesh Paul, while talkingabout a few initial responses attracted by the announcement ofhis new movie ‘Kamasutra 3D’. ‘‘Quite contrary to popular wisdom, Kamasutra was not written all alone by Vatsyayana, but by a range of authors, across centuries. Therefore, the script of ‘Kamasutra 3D’ has incorporated the configuration of this sacred text, through centuries and in various historical contexts’’, the director briefed. According to Mr.Rupesh, he was initially taken aback the mixed reactions he got while approaching various actors for the casting purposes. While a few of them gave him a cold shoulder, branding it as graphic porn, the majority of the very reputed artists whom he approached, appreciated the bold idea. It is speculated that a handful of the vary famous and senior artists from Bollywood would be doing major roles in the movie. The names are yet to be announced. Responding to many a trepidations regarding the movie, the director asserts that ‘Kamasutra 3D’ wouldn’t be a replication of ‘Sex and Zen’ or similar movies, but would be one strongly footed in Indian culture and values. “Yet, there wouldn’t be any compromises made in the movie regarding creative nudity or boldness, to appease the moralpolice’, declares Rupesh Paul. The movie would commence shooting on the 15th of June, in various locations across the globe. A massive crew, with a good share of foreign cinema technicians, is all set for the making of this erotic drama.

‘Rakstharakshassu 3D’ ready for release

After‘My Dear Kuttichathan’, the very second Mollywood 3D movie, ‘Raktharakshassu 3D’ is ready for release. According to the production house, the movie will be released post monsoons, as it aims mainly at the child audience. This movie is much awaited by the industry for various apparent reasons. This will be the first Malayalam movie in which Ananyawould play a very peculiar heroine, after two super hits in Tamil –‘Engeyum Eppothum’ and ‘Nadodikal’. The movie would positively be a break for the star who is amidst controversies for quite some timeregarding her marriage. Likewise, the ‘Second Show’ fame Sunny Wayne (Kurudi) contracts his first hero role, through this movie. The yesteryear veteran Madhu does a much unexpected character, which increases the curio factor of the movie. Declaring sorority with the new trend set in Mollywood by the movies like ‘Ee Adutha Kalathu’ 'Diamond Necklace' and ‘22FK’, this movie will be a multiple narrative with three different climaxes. ‘Unlike most of the movies that reach the theatres as 2D to 3D converted 3D flicks, ‘Raktharakshassu 3D’ is completely shot putting into use original 3D stereoscopic technology. This would enhance the depth and quality of the work and would provide the audience with what they expect of a real 3Dmovie”, says Rupesh Paul, the leader of the directorial team (R factor) of the movie. Unlike the situation where moviesincluding ‘Avatar’ were screened only in very few theatres owing tothe shortage of 3D silver screens, ‘Raktharakshassu 3D’ would be screened in 33 theatres in 3D, in the changed scenario of things. The movie is produced under the banner of 3Dreams International.

"I didn’t support thisnew trend in Malayalam Cinema":Dileep

Janapriyanayakan Dileep opined that along with the new generation films, good films with star value should also come up forthe betterment of Malayalam cinema. He told media in Dubai that most of the much hyped new generation films fail to acquire initial collection when compared with the super star films.
He also added that he competes with his own films and my search is for my next project. Audience waits what the super stars cater to them and hence I didn’t support this new trend, Dileep said. “ I am not under estimating thesenew projects. But, this cannot bring any changes to Malayalam cinema. Another fact is that these new generation films could not collect an equal amount in hundred days that super star films collect even if they run only for four or five days.
Moreover, the new wave films have reach only in metros. ”, Dileep pointed out. “yes. Viewers never want to see the stars in same get up always. The present day stars have come forward after staging excellent performances.
Now audience wants to know what they can deliver further. Andthe films have to be made keeping this point in mind,” he said.

Kerala Box Office - The summer of 2012 (April/May)

The summer of 2012 has turned out to be the best for Malayalam film industry in nearly a decade. The peak summer season of March second half, April and May, has turned out to be a golden period for many small budget films which turned out to be super hits at the Kerala box-office. During this summer there was a marked preference by the audiences for small budget films with fresh content and themes like Ordinary, 22 Female Kottayam,Mallu Singh and Diamond Necklace .
The only biggie that turned out to be a blockbuster was Dileep`s Mayamohini . Mammootty and Mohanlal had their worst summer in recent times at the box-office.
Mammmootty`s King and Commissioner and Cobra turned out to be disasters. Mohanlal`s Grandmaster was liked by critics but at the box-office it was just anaverage grosser. The trade feels both the superstars who were thepillars of the industry for nearly two decades have lost their all-important “opening” at the box-office.
Prithviraj too did not have a good summer as his Masters and now Hero turned out to be lukewarm at the box-office. Jayaram too did not have a good summer as his Thiruvambady Thamban is a total washout.
It is the young brigade of Fahad Fazil, Unni Mukundan, Asif Ali and Boban Kunchacko who are the big winners at the summer sweepstake. Baburaj and Biju Menon have got a new lease of life doing strong character roles. It is films made on a budget of Rs 2 Crores to Rs 2 .50 Crores like Ordianary, 22 Female Kottayam and Diamond Necklace , which turned profitable from its theatrical revenue alone. And if you add satellite and other rights they are mega hits.
The highest grosser of summer of2012 is Dileep`s Mayamohini which grossed Rs 18 Crores and ashare of Rs 8.5 Crores in 50 days. Simply awesome!

Mammootty and Ranjith team up for two films in 2012 ?

News has come out that Mammootty and Ranjith will be beteaming up for two films in the year 2012. The first one, ‘Malabar’, directed by G.S.Vijayan, will have Mammootty as the hero and Ranjith will write the screenplay. Earlier reports had indicated that Renjith will be directing the moviebut now it is clear that he will be confining himself to writing the screenplay only. Mammootty appears in the movie as the driver of Anoop Menon. Sources close to Ranjith claim thathe has created another compelling role similar to that of ‘Pranchiyettan and the Saint’ for Mammootty. The shooting will start during August in and around Calicut afterMammootty completes his work in ‘Jawan of Vellimala’. The second project which has thetwo together will be directed by Ranjith and work on it is expected to start immediately on completion of ‘Malabar’. Shankar Ramakrishnan of ‘Urumi’ fame willbe writing the screenplay and the movie is being produced by Mammootty’s intimate George. George had plans to produce ‘Newsmaker’ directed by Deepan but the plans were suspended forthe time being until next year. It was then that Mammootty suggested to George about the Ranjith film. More details about the movie are expected very soon before the shooting starts in September.
